Goodreads 2016 Reading Challenge

My past few articles have been about setting goals and finding motivation. I’ve told you about my plans for the new year when it comes to Fitness and Health especially. But, I have not touched on unrelated goals (they actually can be related).

People know that I’m somewhat of a “bookworm.” I love to read pretty much anything. I dabble in a variety of genres, but especially mystery and romance. Lately, I have been reading books related to business and financial success!

I always encourage my friends and family to read more! Surprisingly enough, I have met SO many people who don’t take the time to read a book now and then. There are only so many iPhone articles and tweets (debatable) I can take…

There are books for every lifestyle, genre, and interest. There is bound to be a collection that suites your needs. Fiction, Non-Fiction, Comic, etc. It is important for furthering intelligence and health to read now and again.

Check out some of the benefits of reading:

Mental Stimulation –  You are engaging your brain by reading. By doing this you keep the brain active and may prevent future health complications, like Alzheimers, down the road. Consider reading the “exercise” your brain needs to continue functioning and getting stronger. Lift weights by day and books by night!

Memory Building – Reading books, especially series, requires you to retain information about characters and circumstances. The brain has space for more than one could imagine, so why not fill it up? Teaching yourself how to remember story lines can cross over to better memory building for the everyday!

Increased Intelligence – You may not even realize it, but by reading you are learning. Books teach you more vocabulary, life lessons through plots and character, and potentially WAY more depending on the book you’ve chosen. Who doesn’t want to be smarter? Start reading and watch those Jeopardy skills improve!

Developing Writing Skills – Reading books from different authors, genres, and story-types will expose you to many types of writing. By reading them all you enhance your own understanding of writing and what you like/don’t like about each one. This will help with developing personal writing skills.

Improving Patience & Focus – It takes time and focus to read a book. For those who don’t read frequently, it can be difficult when first starting out. Once you get into a really good book, however, you’ll never want to put it down. After reading for a while you will find new methods of focusing and increase your patience.

BOOK TIP:

Sometimes bringing the book with you can help (airplane, train, DMV, etc.)

Reducing Stress – By immersing yourself in someone else’s story you can temporarily escape the stress from your own reality. Yes, you will have to deal with the everyday stress later on, but why not let go for a little while? Give yourself time to relax and make sound decisions.

With that being said, I would like to invite all of my readers to take on the Goodreads 2016 Reading Competition. I have pledged to read 100 books this year. I will add those I read in January in due time, but I would love to see what you read!

If you add me, we can connect and share.
