Top 5 New England Getaways For Your Weekend Trip 🚎

New England pulls out all the stops when it comes to showing travelers gorgeous views, classic architecture, history, and all that much-needed R&R. Being from Massachusetts, I’d say most weekend destinations are perfectly accessible and are so worth a longer drive. I have visited all of the New England states: Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island for quick destination getaways with family and friends.

It is tough to pick my 5 favorites because every city and state is so unique. You will find something different everywhere you go and appreciate it for that reason. That being said, I am all about the sunshine and good times so those outdoor views catch my attention.

Without further ado, let’s explore my Top 5 New England Getaways!

Bar Harbor, ME

It’s tough choosing between Portland and Bar Harbor because I also love spending time in downtown Portland for the day. Bar Harbor is a bit more of a drive for us (about 5 hours) but is totally worth it. The coastal town offers up great food and shorelines.

While visiting Bar Harbor you absolutely have to take a day to explore Acadia National Park. By car or by foot, Acadia’s views are breathtaking and unlike any others I’ve seen. Walking around the trails and in the beauty of the forest humbles you in a lot of ways and makes you appreciate nature’s beauty. You can stay on campgrounds nearby or hotels in neighboring towns.

Newport, RI

Newport is a sweet coastal town about 2 hours from Boston. We visited in the early spring so it was still a bit chilly and a bit less busy. In the summer the streets fill with both locals and tourists spending a day in the town.

Of course the little shops are great for browsing but that wasn’t my favorite part. I love being able to walk to-and-from different areas while enjoying the upbeat atmosphere and excitement of everyone around us. The Cliff Walk and Mansion Tours are a must-see and you can’t leave without grabbing a dozen oysters at one of Newport’s incredible restaurants.

Martha’s Vineyard, MA

I love hopping on a ferry to the vineyard. From the drive to the ferry to the shuttles taking you between Vineyard towns, I consider every aspect of this trip an adventure. If you have a few days then I recommend spending your time in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.

There is a different vibe in both of these areas. Edgartown was a bit more relaxed whereas Oak Bluffs was super happening. If you are staying overnight and want to stay out late for a few drinks then I’d say Oak Bluffs is the spot for you. My must-sees in MV included Edgartown Lighthouse, Oak Bluff Campground, and Aquinnah Cliffs. I could have spent way more time here than a weekend!

North Conway, NH

North Conway was a favorite for my family growing up. We would head up to New Hampshire and stay at one of the local inns/hotels. My parents were always open to staying somewhere new or for even driving down for the day.

When we were kids the spots to go were Story Land, Pirate’s Cove for mini golf, and the Scenic Railroad. I always loved heading into town for some small-time shopping and a bite to eat. Though it wasn’t technically in North Conway, the cutest brunch place I will always remember is Glen Junction Family Restaurant where the trains run around the ceiling.

Waterbury, VT

I have only been to Vermont a few times and loved our experience there. Not only because I love ice cream (kind of a no-brainer) but the foliage in the fall is absolutely gorgeous! Definitely the best time of year to go.

Waterbury is home to the Ben & Jerry’s Factory where you can take a tour, visit the graveyard of flavors past, and test lots of yummy ice cream varieties. They really make it a great family experience. Only 30-minutes away is the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory where you can see how everything is produced. It’s a great place to take the kids!
