We planned to visit Friar Tuck’s Tavern for lunch during our stay in Mystic. It was curiosity that spiked my interest in this downtown location. With menu items I had never tried, their British fare stood out as different. But, they also had traditional bar food like chicken wings and burgers that I wouldn’t turn down. Paul and I love to try new things so this was a no brainer.
Though we didn’t get the late-night experience, it’s worth noting that Friar Tuck’s Tavern has a new event going on almost every night. From live music to B.I.N.G.O they strive to bring people together for a good time. After a great lunch visit, I would eventually love to return and experience their late-night crowd.
The Dining Experience
Friar Tuck’s is located in the Courtyard Gallery just off the main downtown street. They had indoor seating and a courtyard for the warmer months. The bar was really cool and could be described as inviting. We were told to sit wherever we’d like when we walked in but it was pretty crowded. Paul and I opted for a table for two towards the back wall so we could watch and take in the atmosphere.
All of the waitstaff was friendly and appeared to be genuinely happy. We asked for their customer favorites which led us to their classic Scotch Eggs and Tuck Wings. They had a great local beer selection on draft which Paul took advantage of while I decided to get a seasonal cocktail (so good). We laughed at some of the goofy bar signs they had on the wall while enjoying the comfort of the tavern.
The Bite
When the Scotch Eggs came out I had no idea what to expect. I had honestly never heard of or tried a scotch egg in my life. They looked and tasted great! Paul said they were definitely the best he’s had and the owner informed us they are a fan favorite. The wings were absolutely delicious too. I think we could have indulged in another full plate if we didn’t have our entrees coming.
The burger cooked perfectly, juicy, and served with a heaping pile of fries which was exactly what I hoped for. It tasted great and really hit the spot! Paul wanted to try something new so, on a whim, he ordered the Lancashire Hotpot. If you’re not familiar (I definitely wasn’t) this is a lamb stew served with fried cottage chips and bread. It looked and smelled so good. Paul loved all of the flavors it had.
The Full Package
We left feeling full and happy after our experience at Friar Tuck’s Tavern. It was a great casual bar and grub spot for game days, an informal lunch, or just to hang out with friends. I would definitely return to try more of their menu items that we didn’t get around to on this trip.
