Whenever someone asks me what my favorite thing in Hawaii was, the answer comes without hesitation. One of the activities we booked early on was our Waterfall & Rainforest Hiking Adventure with Hike Maui. With the breathtaking views from everywhere on the island, any hike would be great. What really made this one special was getting the opportunity to stand under, jump in, and be completely enchanted by real-life waterfalls.
This five-hour adventure started with a scenic drive on which our tour guide divulged so much insight into Maui’s culture, nature, and necessary spots to eat. You learn a lot of interesting facts about the islands and it’s history from someone who has grown up surrounded by it. Our small tour group came from all around the US which led to great conversations about differences in weather, animals, cuisine, and entertainment.
Upon arrival at the hiking spot, our tour guide helped us load our backpacks with bananas, sandwiches, water, and other snacks. She also advised us to cover our exposed limbs with bug spray because there are lots of mosquitos in the forest. We took photos under the giant bamboo trees before embarking on our adventure so we could remember the experience with a one-of-a-kind snapshot.
The hike was approximately three miles and, apart from a few nerve-wracking climbs, quite flat. The terrain was definitely doable for anyone not suffering from an injury. It is a must-do for anyone visiting Hawaii because I had no other experience where I was able to pick guava from its roots, crack it open, and take a bite. We also stumbled upon coffee beans, pineapples, and many other unique Hawaiian plants and fruits.
Jumping in the waterfalls was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done in my life but it was so worth it. I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to “daredevil-esque” activities and I made it out okay. I was shaking like a leaf but once I was in midair and hit the water I felt so much freedom and joy. Those moments when you are side to side with a 15-foot waterfall are truly unbeatable. That moment will forever have a place in my memories.
Are you visiting Hawaii for a honeymoon, anniversary, or just because? I cannot recommend this enough. Seeing a waterfall and experiencing nature in this way is an adventure to appreciate.
